THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Abelas
Series: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Canon Point: After he left the Temple of Mythal
Character Age: 1000+
Background: As it pertains to Abelas

Personality: Abelas is a stoic man of duty first and foremost. His sworn duty is watching over the Vir'abelasan, the Well of Sorrows. An act to attest his dedication to this, he named himself "Sorrow" after the well, as he thought he would watch over it for eternity. For a millennia at least, he has either been awake and fighting, defending the Temple of Mythal, or sleeping in uthenera, an "eternal" slumber usually reserved for elder elves that grew weary of living, however for Abelas and his Sentinels it was more like a hibernationEvery time he would awaken the world would grow more and more foreign, as the empire of the ancient elves became nothing but history and legend. In an ancient form of magical writing, Abelas left a message in his temple about when he stepped up to lead the Sentinels as the ancient elves began to decline. He claims to have shed his name once when he started his service of Mythial, and shed it again after she passed, and has taken responsibility for teaching the younger generations of sentinel elves otherwise they will "lose what they should have been". The message is accompanied by a sense of gut wrenching loss from Abelas.

Despite his dedication to the well, he does not let it blind him to dire situations at hand. It can come close, but if one actively works to show him and the temple respect, regardless of their race, he can be persuaded to trust them. This speaks volumes to his character and open mindedness relative to others of his generation. Take Solas, for example, another ancient elf who also was faced with the same circumstance. Solas did not even consider those who he met after waking to be people at all. To be fair, Abelas makes it clear that he feels no kinship with any inhabitants of modern Thedas, even other elves, referring to all of them as "shemlen" (a derogatory term elves use to describe humans for their short lifespans though usually use by elves, not to them). However, Unlike Solas who makes it a point to trust no one but himself, Abelas can accept the help of these strangers and will even remark that they seem to be a righteous sort. Even modern elves are slow to do this, and ancient Elvhen are implied to be more judgmental than their successors.

That does not mean he offers his help readily or makes it easy for the outsiders even if they show him respect. He is perpetually vague, and seems to deliberately hold important information back. The veilfire writing of his makes it clear he lived to see Mythal's fall, yet refuses to admit to the party whether she was truly a god or not, nor does he go through particularly great lengths to prove she did, in fact, exist. Though he does inform them that drinking from the Well will bind them to Mythal's will, so knowing a bit about Mythal would have been very handy really. He starts off pretty forthcoming with information, but then cuts off and denies answers before one can get a full picture. Part of it seems to be his curt and down-to-business nature, and some of it seems to come from a place of bitterness and a teeny bit of passive aggression.

In the conclusion of Abelas' part in the story, he is either killed during his effort to destroy the Well to prevent it from being despoiled, or he is convinced to willingly allow someone to partake in it for the sake of a greater good. Either ending is tragic, though arguably being forced to live without the purpose he's dedicated his life to is more cruel. If he lives he claims that he may go looking for other places the "shemlen"haven't gotten to, or that only uthenara awaits them for eternity "If fate is kind". Without the well to protect he is all but lost, and his concern seems to shift to focus more on his Sentinels and to do what may be in their best interests, whether it be finding something new to protect, to finally take their eternal rest.

Powers/Abilities:

Veilfire writing: a form of ancient Elvhen writing that can convey images and emotions along with the words.

Piloting an Ancient Magical Temple: Abelas and his sentinels are shown to be capable of activating the temples defenses, masking it from sight, opening and closing magical doors, and making stairs happen when needed.

Ritual of the Vir'abelasan: Abelas knows how to recreate the ritual that created the well of sorrows, but is not likely to make use of this any time soon.

Uthenera: The Sentinels often fell into a deep slumber where they are able to wander the realm of dreams as they will, for however long they please.

Ancient Elvhen magic: no one really knows what this does yet. So far all Abelas has been seen doing with it is a knockback and stun before attempting to blow up something ancient. As far as Abelas is seen using it, it simply looks like pretty normal magic with a cool smokey eye effect.

Less Pretentious Not-so-Elvhen Magic: Magic is broken up into schools, the base in Inquisition being frost, fire, storm, and spirit, with additional specializations Fade, knight-enchanter, and necromancer. Presumably any mage can make use of the first four specializations, but it's a matter of choice which they focus in. Nothing is known where Abelas' specs lay.

Generic Mage Things: Mages can be utilizes in summoning veilfire (the "memory of flame", it gives off no heat, and won't burn down a candle, but offers light), as well as moving things around and setting them appropriately, such as reassembling a collapsed stone bridge, or wooden stairs. All mages are capable of dreaming with complete coherency, and the Fade (the realm of dreams and spirits) is where they draw their power from.

Sentinel Stealth: The Sentinels are described as being able to fade into the shadows if hassling their attackers did not wind up in there favor. There are a few mage abilities suck as fadestep and fadecloak that would accomplish this effect.

Racial Benefits: Elves receive a natural boost in stats pertaining to magic, as well as a 25% boost in ranged defense (including magical projectiles). Elves also see a little better in the dark than humans do.

Power Nerfs (if applicable): Because so little is known about his abilities, I'd like to see him significantly nerfed and use regains to "spec" him so as not to contradict canon should he make a return. This means most of his offensive abilities in ancient magic and regular magic will be gone or reduced to the point they cannot be used in combat (I.e. He can light a campfire, but not blow up a person). However for the sake of not making him completely useless in combat, his defensive abilities remain, such as stealth, knockbacks, and activating magical artifacts.

Inventory: His armor. Really that's all he's got. He'd probably appreciate a staff too. Nothing particularly special about the staff other than it can channel magic easier. Probably a small knife too just for utility purposes.

Incentives: His Sentinels' well being would be the only thing to get him to cooperate in a fight he does not feel is his own. He wouldn't like to have their well being threatened so, but without it, he'd likely just try to go back to sleep himself. His lack of power would also eventually be a motivation since he would very much not appreciate being altered.
